Ignęs Sodré was a clinical psychologist in Brazil before moving to London in 1969 to study at the Institute of Psychoanalysis of the British Psychoanalytical Society, where she is currently a training and supervising analyst. She has a private practice and teaches in London and abroad. She has written on clinical psychoanalysis and on literature and has co-authored Imagining Characters: Six Conversations About Women Writers with A. S. Byatt (1995). Here, she argues in her essay that George Eliot worked through issues that were unresolved in The Mill on the Floss more successfully eleven years later in Dorothea's story in Middlemarch.
